We teamed up with Greyston Bakery this month for our Mint Chocolate Brownie flavor. Greyston is a really cool social enterprise that hires and mentors the local community and contributes all profits to the Greyston Foundation to support jobs, housing, healthcare, etc for the underprivileged. And they gave each of our members a brownie!
They also put us in touch with THE Jerry of Ben & Jerry’s, as they are B&J’s brownie supplier as well. Jerry called me this week. We talked about their grassroots campaign against Haagen Daz/Pillsbury in the 80s. Haagen Daz strong armed their distributor, telling them they could carry Haagen Daz or Ben & Jerry’s, but not both. To combat that, B&J ran this awesome grassroots campaign against Pillsbury, asking “What’s the Doughboy Afraid Of?” in Rolling Stone, on aerial ads in sports areas, on billboards and buses. Eventually Pillsbury capitulated and B&J got distribution. He gave me a little insight as to how to approach our little Brach’s case.. which is still ongoing, hopefully with the help of the NYC’s National Employment Law Project.
