Flavors of the Month: May 2011

Mint Julep
fresh mint and bourbon

Break out those Derby Hats and those Seersucker Suits y’all - it’s Kentucky Derby time! In its honor, we’ve crafted a Mint Julep ice cream. This isn’t your normal mint ice cream - it’s not green and saccharine like the rest. It’s fresh, herbal, and minty, as we use real spearmint from the unconventional Windfall Farms in Montgomery, NY. We’re spiking things up with Baby Bourbon from New York’s oldest distillery, Tuthilltown Spirits.

Salted Caramel n Shortbread
our signature salted caramel ice cream mixed with lavender shortbread

We recently helped out our friends at the Brooklyn Brew Shop with their Spring Tasting where we discovered not only the beautiful pairing of ice cream and beer, but of salted caramel and lavender. Brooklyn Brew Shop released their four Spring brews and invited four local food folks to pair a food with one of the four. Our brew was the Lady Lavender, with which we paired our Honey-Lavender and our Salted Caramel. The pairing of our signature Salted Caramel with the Lavender was awesome, and we wanted to share that with you all this month.

For the Ice Cream Adventurer:
RAMPS!
ramp ice cream

We’ve been waiting for this day for a year. Since discovering ramps last year at the end of the season, we’ve been dreaming of how to create a ramp ice cream. A visit to the Greenmarket last week brought delight when we saw the big RAMPS sign with those lovely leafy leeks adorning the table below. Diana told them what we’re up to, they said “good luck with that,” and luck was had as we crafted our caramelized ramp ice cream. It’s quite good - a sweet onion garlicky taste. We’re offering it as a flavor of the month for the advanced ice cream enthusiasts among the group. You know who you are.
